The Cauvery River Water Sharing Tribunal ruled in 2007 that Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union territory of Puducherry should share the river's water. The water from the river flows into the Bay of Bengal. After passing through Thrichi District, the river splits into two branches: the southern branch and the northern branch.
